SLEIGH BELLS // REIGN OF TERROR
MY TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2010.
5. Sleigh Bells “Treats”
Picture the cheerleading squad teaming up with the guitarist of the metal band from your local high school. Throw in that one kid who knows way too much about hip hop to create a few beats. The result is Sleigh Bells: ex-pop diva Alexis Krauss & ex-Poison the Well guitarist Derek Miller. It’s a match made in pop hell, & perhaps that’s why “Treats” is do damn good. It’s pop song chants over distorted guitars and maxed out bass beats. Krauss seduces with a mousy voice that evolves into sexual moans and shrieks (see: “Rill Rill” and “Straight A’s”). Miller shreds and makes an alarm evacuation sound danceable. They are the new wave, and it’s no coincidence that on “Crown on the Ground” they almost sound like they’re referring to themselves. It’s loud, in your face, and the guitars devilishly egg on anyone willing to challenge them for it.
6. Ke$ha “Animal / Cannibal”
7. Kanye West “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”
8. Rihanna “Loud” / Katy Perry “Teenage Dream”
9. Vampire Weekend “Contra”
10. Drake “Thank Me Later”
MY TOP 10 SONGS OF 2010.
7. Sleigh Bells “Infinity Guitars”
One of my favorite new discoveries came early this year when I got the chance to see two big buzz bands play at my work: Die Antwoord & Sleigh Bells. The show was absolute bonkers, and I was happy to find their albums were just as solid as their live shows. “Infinity Guitars” via Sleigh Bells is noise. It’s too short, too fun, and too sexy. It makes me simultaneously want to clap along in my wayfarers & leather jacket and lay on the group & touch myself. In case you haven’t heard the song yet (doubtful as it’s started to appear in everything from car commercials to mtv ads), give it a spin & just wait for Alexis Krauss’ “uh uh uh” to kick in. Then you’ll understand why they named their album Treats.
8. David Guetta “Who’s That Chick? (feat. Rihanna)”
9. Willow Smith “Whip My Hair”
10. Simon Curtis “The Dark (ft. Jay-Z)”
sleigh bells - infinity guitars.
